Cape Town - Springbok No 8 Duane Vermeulen says he never considered not representing the Springboks despite threats over not receiving compensation from his French club.

Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal recently said he would not pay players if they left during the June Test window, which cast some doubt over whether Vermeulen would turn out for the Boks against Ireland this month.

But according to World Rugby regulations, clubs have to release their players for the June Test window and Vermeulen says he always intended to play in the three-Test series against the Irish.

“It was not even a decision for me to stay that side,” he told reporters at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday.

“I said from the beginning I wanted to play internationals. If I can represent my country - no matter where - then I want to do it with all my powers.”

Vermeulen insists that his contract with Toulon allows him to play international rugby whenever needed by his country.

“Everything is in a binding contract so I just want to be able to represent my country. I’m unbelievably happy to be here and hopefully it will be an unbelievable time with a new coach and team and I’m looking forward to working with them.”
