Cape Town - Rassie Erasmus' main task in his new SA Rugby role will be to get the Springboks back on the same level as the world champion All Blacks.

Reports in South African and Irish media last week indicated that plans were in place for SA Rugby to try and lure the current Munster director of rugby back to South Africa.

Erasmus' return now appears a done deal and on Sunday, Afrikaans weekly newspaper, Rapport, outlined what his new role would entail.

In his new position as SA Rugby's director of rugby, Erasmus will be tasked with initiating a plan to return the Boks to the same level as the world's No 1-ranked team.

Springbok coach Allister Coetzee will report to Erasmus, the report stated.

The partnership will be similar to the one Coetzee and Erasmus enjoyed at the Stormers, when the latter was also director of rugby.

The 44-year-old Erasmus signed a three-year contract with Munster and the IRFU (Ireland Rugby Football Union) from July 1, 2016, but earlier reports indicated that there was a clause in his contract that would allow him to take up an offer from the Springboks should he provide the necessary notice.

Erasmus has impressed since joining Munster, leading them to the final of the PRO12 - a competition which features 12 professional sides from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

He was also named PRO12 coach of the year this season.
