Cape Town - Former Sharks scrumhalf Cobus Reinach does have 10 Springbok caps to his name, but he seems a long way off the selection radar as preparations for next year's Rugby World Cup in Japan continue.

Reinach, who now plays his rugby for Northampton Saints in England, last played a Test during the 2015 Rugby Championship.

Faf de Klerk is currently the first-choice Bok scrumhalf and the favourite to wear the No 9 jersey in Japan, but Erasmus has included three other scrumhalves in his Rugby Championship squad for 2018 with Ivan van Zyl, Ross Cronje and Embrose Papier all waiting in the wings.

There is no doubt that Reinach has his work cut out for him, and that is precisely why he is eyeing a big season in England.

"Personally, I set my own goals and we don’t have to get into that, but last year wasn’t good enough and I have to lift it a level," Reinach told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo.

"The World Cup is around the corner and for me to even be in the selection, I need to lift my game by a percentage."

Reinach went on to speak about the differences between playing Super Rugby and Premiership rugby.

"It’s a bit different to what we’re used to down south, but at the end of the day rugby is rugby," he said.

"You need more points than the other team to win and you just need to figure out how to do it."

Northampton open their Aviva Premiership campaign on September 1 with a trip to Johan Ackermann's Gloucester.
