Cape Town - As much as South Africans would love to play host to another Rugby World Cup tournament, it won't happen in 2023, if bookmakers are to be believed...

South Africa are in a three-way tussle with Ireland and France for hosting rights to the spectacle set to kick into action in a little over six years time.

South Africa memorably played host to the 1995 tournament, the 22-year anniversary of which was last Saturday, a day co-incidentally on which the Springboks beat France 35-12 at Ellis Park - the same venue which saw Joel Stransky drop goal the national side to victory over the All Blacks all those years prior.

Ireland, the bookies' favourites at 1/2, have never been sole hosts of a World Cup, but did host matches during the 1991 and 1999 tournaments.

France hosted the tournament in 2007, which the Springboks won under the guidance of Jake White, and hosted matches in 1991 and 1999 as well.

France are considered outsiders by the Sportingbet website at 11/2, while South Africa can be backed at an attractive looking 9/4.

World Rugby will reveal the identity of the 2023 World Cup hosts on Wednesday, November 15, 2017.

Japan will host the ninth Rugby World Cup in 2019.
