Super Rugby Unlocked finally began - and with a pleasing enough bang - at the weekend, ending some seven months of franchise-level drought in South Africa after the cruel end of Super Rugby-proper due to Covid-19.

All three matches produced bright passages of play, even if consistency was lacking and a strong impression remained that the bulk of the players countrywide are a long way off optimal levels of sharpness and durability.

But some individuals managed to stand out, despite that drawback.
