There was a sharp reminder on television on Sunday evening of just how close the Sharks came to being almost certainly out of the running for the Super Rugby Unlocked title, one full round before it finishes.

The side who dominated the broader Super Rugby-proper of early 2020, before it was scuppered by the coronavirus, managed to stay at the races – despite the Bulls' still overwhelming mantle of favourites – by pipping Griquas 34-33 in a Kimberley heart-stopper on Friday night.

Both they and the Stormers, their big coastal-rival opponents at Kings Park this Saturday, could continue to dare to dream of hoisting the Unlocked silverware during this week, even as clarity was still awaited on the fate of the scheduled Bulls-Pumas clash at Loftus on Friday.
