Cape Town - Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies heaped praise on his team-mates after being named man-of-the-match in their Super Rugby win over the Stormers in Johannesburg on Saturday night.

Jantjies was instrumental in plotting the demise of the Cape side, kicking 19 points with the boot as the Lions won 29-22.

“I just want to say thanks to the team. They make it easy for 9 and 10 to make good decisions,” Jantjies said in pitch-side interview after the game.

“Tonight we knew that the Stormers were going want to come and beat us. So it had to be an 80 minute performance.”

Jantjies also had a special word for replacement scrumhalf Faf de Klerk, who was superb when he came on in the second half.

De Klerk injected pace into the Lions attack and scored a try after taking a quick tap close to the Stormers goal-line. He also won a brilliant turnover after the hooter had sounded when the Stormers were attacking near the red zone.

“I think the bench also played a big role, especially with Faf coming on, scoring that try and then winning the turnover at the end. So it was a complete performance,” Jantjies continued.

Jantjies also slotted a drop goal late in the match to cap a memorable evening.

“Me and JP (Ferreira), our defensive coach, we’re training thousands of drop goals. We’ve even got a competition with drop goals. I told him I’ll get one in the season, so tonight was the night,” Jantjies quipped.
