Cape Town - Samoa and Chiefs utility back Tim Nanai-Williams is poised to further his career in France after signing a three-year deal to join Clermont.

Nanai-Williams will leave the Chiefs at the end of the 2018 Super Rugby season and he has signed until the end of 2021 with Clermont, who announced his recruitment on Friday.

Clermont director of rugby Franck Azéma expressed his delight with the 28-year-old's decision to join the Top 14 champions.

"This is the first good news in the construction of our workforce in the coming seasons", he told Clermont's official website.

"Tim is a player with very strong Super Rugby experience with the Chiefs.

"He also wreaked some havoc with his national team whether at Sevens or the 15-man game, especially at the last World Cup. Like Ice (Clermont's former All Black utility back Isaiah Toeava), he is an extremely technically talented player with very strong support and able to play almost every position in the three-quarter line.

"We are convinced that this is a player who will surprise in our championship and whose profile perfectly corresponds to the philosophy of movement game that we have developed here in Clermont for several seasons.

"As with every time we bring a new player into our squad, the goal is to bring something new, and that's real plus. We are sure that will be the case with Tim."

Nanai-Williams won back-to-back Super Rugby titles with the Chiefs in 2012 and 2013. He can play at full-back, wing or centre, and was Samoa's first-choice flyhalf during their recent end-of-year Tests against Scotland, Romania and England.
