The Stormers will celebrate winning the inaugural United Rugby Championship (URC) with an open-top bus parade in the streets of Cape Town this Friday.

John Dobson's charges beat the Bulls 18-13 in an all-South African final this past weekend to claim their first major international trophy.

The idea behind the parade is to thank the Stormers faithful who, despite Covid-19 restrictions, turned out in their numbers to support Steven Kitshoff's men.

The Stormers bus will depart from Grand Parade at 10:30 on Friday before turning into Adderley Street, continuing along Wale Street, and proceeding down Long and Loop street before heading into Somerset Road to Cape Town Stadium.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Kitshoff and Dobson will address the crowd outside City Hall before the players depart on the bus.

Over the coming months, the URC trophy will be taken into the various communities in greater Cape Town areas, including visits to schools and clubs.

Members of the public will also be able to have their picture taken with the trophy at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, 22 June. The stadium will be open from 11:00 to 15:30 to facilitate this.

Dobson said the Stormers were very grateful for the chance to celebrate with supporters.

"We have really felt the love of our supporters and the greater community this season, and it will be fantastic for the players to say thank you to them in this way," said Dobson in a press release.

"The City of Cape Town and the Mayor have been amazing in the way they have backed the team, and this is another example of how they have stepped up to help connect us with our fans."

Hill-Lewis said that it was an honour to celebrate the Stormers after their incredible achievement.

"It's wonderful to be hosting the Stormers for their victory parade on Friday, and I'm looking forward to seeing all of Cape Town come out and show their support for our champions!" he said.
