Cape Town - UP-Tuks hooker Werner Fourie has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2020 Varsity Cup season after undergoing brain tumour surgery.

According to the Varsity Cup's official website, the 21-year-old was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this month, a day after scoring a hat-trick in Tuks' 42-40 win against NWU in their opening Varsity Cup match.

"I did not expect anything. After the game against North-West, I started to develop a headache which progressively worsened. That is why I went to the hospital. At most, I thought I might be concussed. It was only after I had undergone a scan that it was revealed that I have a brain tumour," Fourie said.

"In hindsight, the best thing I could have done was going to the hospital. If I did not, I would in all probability have gone on playing. The end consequences could have been dire."

Fourie is a BIS Information Science student.

Tuks currently top the Varsity Cup standings, with three wins from their opening three matches.
