Washington - Moises Duque booted the winning penalty kick between the uprights on the final play Saturday to give Brazil a shocking 24-23 upset of the United States in the Americas Rugby Championship.

Winless host Brazil stunned the top of the table Eagles in an epic triumph for the South American side and a devastating defeat for the US squad.

The outcome opens the door for the winner of Sunday's Canada at Argentina match to seize the lead in the round-robin event with only one week of matches remaining.

Saturday's other result saw host Uruguay hold off Chile 23-20.

Brazil jumped ahead on penalty kicks by Duque in the third and sixth minutes and tries by Daniel Sancery and Lucas Duque put the hosts amazingly ahead 18-0.

A James Bird penalty in the 31st minute and a Joe Taufetee try six minutes later lifted the US within 18-8 at half-time.

Aladdin Schirmer's converted try in the 46th minute pulled the Americans closer but Brazil stretched the margin to 21-13 on a Lucas Duque penalty.

Niku Kruger pulled the Eagles back within a single point on a try in the 63rd minute and gave the US side its only lead on a penalty kick seven minutes from full time.

But that only set the stage for the late penalty call against the Americans that set up the winning kick.

At Uruguay, the hosts trailed 17-16, but a late try by Rodrigo Silva put them ahead of the Condors to stay.
