Cape Town - Rugby commentator Gavin Cowley feels the time has come for Western Province to move their headquarters away from Newlands to the Cape Town Stadium.

The World Rugby Sevens Series was successfully staged at Cape Town Stadium this past weekend, where Cowley was a commentator when the Blitzboks defended their home title.

The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) is against the idea of moving away from the iconic Newlands stadium which they own.

Cowley, a former Eastern Province and Junior Springbok flyhalf, feels the time has come for WP to move to the more modern stadium in Green Point.

“It’s unfortunately a reality that commercial factors eventually become defining,” Cowley was quoted as saying by Netwerk24.

“The Irish had to make peace with the fact that Lansdowne Road eventually had to make way for the Aviva Stadium. The tragedy here is that all the history attached to Newlands would be lost.

“But it’s seldom that you see stadium utilised solely for one sport. They are used as multi-purpose stadiums for economic reasons. This is a unique situation.

“It’s tragic that the Cape Town Stadium, with so much to offer, is not used. I want to see rugby move there.”

Ironically, Cowley was speaking at the launch of a new book, Rugby at Newlands: A history in 50 Test matches 1891-2015.
