Cape Town - Peter de Villiers will stay on as head coach of the Zimbabwe national side, but he is set to be given some help.

According to a report on Kwese Sports, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) board met last week to discuss the side's disappointing Africa Gold Cup performance in 2018.

Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and only avoided relegation from the competition on the last day of the tournament.

It placed a significant amount of heat on former Bok coach De Villiers, but the ZRU has confirmed that his job is safe for now.

That said, the decision has been taken to give De Villiers some guidance when it comes to team selection.

"We are going to see the coach serve out his term," said ZRU president Marlon Jani.

"There was never a question from the union's side about the issue of Peter de Villiers as a coach. He is going to serve out his contract, but we are going to help him.

"So we are going to beef up the selection committee, so that we have diverse views, we can challenge the coach and assist him in terms of the choices that are going into any team that will participate in the Gold Cup."
