Cape Town - The future of EP Rugby president Cheeky Watson could be determined when the union holds its special general meeting in Saturday.

Watson’s position as EP Ruby president is seemingly in jeopardy with certain clubs reportedly set to table a motion of no confidence against him.

It was reported late last year that Watson was unlikely to get the majority of the clubs votes at the meeting on January 30.

Willem Oliphant was reportedly the favourite to succeed Watson as EPRU president.

This follows a financial crisis at the EP Kings that has seen the South African Rugby Union (SARU) take control of the union’s Super Rugby franchise, the Southern Kings.

The financial matter at EP Rugby is not yet resolved, but SARU on Thursday assured that operations and participation of the Southern Kings in Super Rugby would be unaffected by an application to liquidate EP Rugby (Pty) Ltd.

The action was brought by the South African Rugby Players’ Association (SARPA) on behalf of a number of players over unpaid salaries. The application was triggered by what SARPA described as the recent “preferential treatment of creditors” by EP Rugby (Pty) Ltd.
