Cape Town - Cheeky Watson’s tenure as president of the Eastern Province Rugby Union is likely to come to an end.

According to Afrikaans newspaper, Rapport, a motion of no confidence will be tabled against Watson at a special general meeting on January 30.

Willem Oliphant is the favourite to succeed Watson as EPRU president.

This follows a financial crisis at the EP Kings that has seen the South African Rugby Union (SARU) take control of the union’s Super Rugby franchise, the Southern Kings.

Watson had promised a R200m sponsorship for the Kings but this failed to materialise, with players forced to accept food vouchers following the non-payment of salaries.

Watson is unlikely to get the majority of the clubs votes at the meeting, as was the case last year when he accumulated 219 votes to beat Eben Coltman for the presidency.
