Former Sharks and Lions lock, Stephan Lewies has been named club captain at Harlequins.

Lewies will lead the side during the 2020/21 Premiership as well as the Champions Cup tournaments.

The 1.98 m Lewies has made an instant impact at the London based club after arriving for the 2019/20 season where he went on to play 19 games.

“It’s a massive opportunity - a huge honour," Lewies told the Harlequins website.

"It comes with big responsibility but it’s something special and I’m really excited. Never in my wildest dreams when I signed did I think I’d be in this position," he added.

Lewies played 63 times for the Sharks in Super Rugby between 2014 and 2018 before moving to Japan for a brief stint with Kamaishi Seawaves.

He returned to South Africa where he turned out for the Lions on 13 occasions during 2019 before making the move north.

Lewies has one Springbok cap to his name, turning out for the national side in 2014 against Scotland.
