FROM THE VAULT | Which has been the most memorable Rugby World Cup?

Nine of the most memorable tournaments ever held in all of sport.

From 1987 to 2019, the Rugby World Cups played to date have left fans awe-struck, elated and at times, in tears.

But which has been the stand-out tournament for you?

1987

New Zealand's David Kirk lifts the inaugural Webb Ellis Cup after the All Blacks defeat France 29-9 at Eden Park in Auckland.

1991

Australia's Nick Farr-Jones becomes the second scrumhalf in as many tournaments to lift the cup after a 12-6 win over rivals and joint-hosts England at Twickenham in London.

1995

Who could ever forget Francois Pienaar and Nelson Mandela post-final after the Springboks make their belated debut in the tournament and win on home soil, beating the All Blacks 15-12 after extra time at a packed Ellis Park in Johannesburg thanks to a Joel Stransky drop goal?

1999

The Wallabies become the first side to win the Rugby World Cup for a second time, thrashing France 35-12 in the final (still the biggest ever margin of victory) at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. John Eales the smiling skipper on the day.

2003

England exact revenge over Australia - in Australia - thanks to an extra-time drop goal by Jonny Wilkinson at Stadium Australia in Sydney. Martin Johnson the grateful recipient of the Webb Ellis Cup after a 20-17 scoreline at the eventual final whistle.

2007

Coach Jake White and captain John Smit lead the Springboks to a second title, beating defending champions England 15-6 in the final at the Stade de France.

2011

The All Blacks join the Wallabies and Springboks on two victories apiece with a nail-biting 8-7 win - once again on home soil - over France as Les Bleus lose a final for the third time and for the second time at Eden Park in Auckland. Richie McCaw gets his hands on the trophy.

2015

McCaw becomes the first and only skipper to date to lift a second Webb Ellis Cup as the All Blacks make it three overall victories thanks to a 34-17 win over Australia at Twickenham in London.

2019

Not to be outdone, the Springboks join their fiercest rivals, the All Blacks, on three Webb Ellis Cup titles with a commanding 32-12 victory over England in Yokohama, Japan. Siya Kolisi sends South Africa into delirium as he raises the trophy.

2023

To be hosted in France ... can't wait!

All bias and patriotism aside, which of the nine tournaments to date has been your most memorable?
