Cape Town - All Black prop Jamie Mackintosh has signed a short-term deal with French Top 14 club Montpellier, who are coached by former Springbok coach Jake White.

The 30-year-old was invited to play games for the Barbarians against Gloucester and Argentina in the United Kingdom last month.

According to the Stuff.co.nz website, following the games for the Barbarians he visited his former Highlanders team-mate, and close friend, Tom Donnelly who is playing for Montpellier.

While Mackintosh was visiting, Montpellier had some prop struggles and Mackintosh was whisked into the set-up.

Mackintosh has played 123 games for Southland from 2004 has also been a key figure at Super Rugby level, representing the Highlanders and Chiefs.

However, the one-Test All Black struggled to attract much interest from New Zealand's Super Rugby franchises for the 2016 season which prompted him to look abroad.

He made his debut last week for Montpellier against Castres, a game which they lost 34-19.

It is understood that Mackintosh has been signed on a short-term contract but is gunning to pick up a longer-term deal with the French club or elsewhere in Europe

White, who won the Rugby World Cup with the Springboks in 2007, has already lured several overseas players to the club.
