Cape Town - More EP Kings rugby players could opt to take the embattled union to court following the non-payment of salaries.

The EP Rugby Union is in dire straits with players not receiving their salaries the last few months.

Hooker Michael van Vuuren earlier this week indicated that he was prepared to take the union to court and a few more could follow suit.

The Kings are set to play Super Rugby next season, and given their dire financial situation, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) opted to step in and take control of matters.

It is believed that SARU has identified around 22 Kings players who will be offered contracts, while the remaining players in the Kings squad will be contracted to the EPRU.

This led to an uproar among the Kings squad and on Monday the players handed over a petition of grievances to EPRU president Cheeky Watson, raising concerns about the fact that only some of them would be offered SARU contracts for Super Rugby.

The players gave the union until Friday to respond to their requests but they received another shock when the union’s offices closed on Tuesday for the festive season.

“We got a final Christmas present from the EPRU. They closed their doors for the festive period and will only re-open on January 11,” a player, who chose to remain anonymous, told Netwerk24.

The player also admitted that they could follow the same route as Van Vuuren.

“Michael van Vuuren has indicated that he will take the union to court and this is what may happen on a larger scale in future. The players may decide to go to court as a unit.”
