Montpellier - Former Springbok scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar, a Rugby World Cup winner in 2007, has signed a three-year contract with Montpellier, the French Top 14 club announced on Tuesday.

Pienaar, 33, joins the French club from Ulster, where he had been for seven seasons and played in the 2012 European Cup final before being released due to what he said were Irish federation rules on foreign players.

The ex-Sharks playmaker, also an astute kicker, won 88 international caps and will link up with fellow World Cup winners Frans Steyn and the Du Plessis brothers - Bismarck and Jannie - at Montpellier, who will be coached by former Scotland boss Vern Cotter next season.
