Cape Town - There have been calls for South African rugby teams to join the Anglo-Welsh Cup in Europe.

The Anglo-Welsh Cup is a knock-out competition featuring the 12 English Premiership clubs and the four Welsh regions.

According to BBC Sport, Premiership Rugby is investigating the possibility of introducing South African Currie Cup teams into the competition.

According to the report, changes to rugby's calendar post-2019 would offer English rugby bosses the chance to invite Currie Cup teams into the developmental tournament.

The prospective competition would run during the international windows in November and February/March.

With South Africa set to lose two franchises in Super Rugby, this could be a further possibility for SA Rugby to explore options abroad.

The national rugby governing body is sitting with a dilemma in deciding which two teams will exit the Super Rugby tournament.

The have been calls for the Cheetahs and Southern Kings to be the teams axed, and another solution recently proposed was to enter the two franchises into the PRO12 competition in Europe.

The PRO12 is an annual competition involving 12 professional sides from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.
