Cape Town - The Boland Rugby Union looks set to be excluded from the Stormers franchise, a report in Die Son newspaper indicates.

The Stormers franchise was formed in 1998, consisting of Western Province, Boland and South Western Districts.

SWD broke away to join the Southern Spears (now Southern Kings) franchise from 2006, but now look set to re-join the Stormers - this time at the expense of Boland.

WP Rugby became the sole owners of the franchise after a decision made by SA Rugby last year.

They are allowed one partner, and relations between WP and Boland have seemingly deteriorated, so much so that SWD will now be asked to form part of the Stormers franchise.

The Stormers were reluctant to comment on the matter on Wednesday, but confirmed that a statement regarding the matter will be issued in due course.

“We will be making a statement on the matter, but only once we have communicated with both unions. Until then we cannot comment,” a spokesperson for the franchise told Sport24.
