Cape Town - Wales coach Warren Gatland could be the next Northampton boss, according to the English club's president Keith Barwell.

Previous director of rugby, Jim Mallinder, was sacked last week after a series of poor results left them languishing down in 10th position in the Aviva Premiership.

Mallinder was appointed instead of Gatland back in 2007 but, after 10 years' service with Saints, the former Sale Sharks head honcho was relieved of his duties.

Despite being overlooked for the role a decade ago, the New Zealander has since gone on to enjoy success with Wales and the British and Irish Lions and has two years remaining on his contract.

Barwell, however, insists that they are interested in the 54-year-old becoming their next coach.

“When we recruited Jim 10 years ago Warren Gatland was one of those shortlisted,” he told the Daily Mirror.

“We decided not to ring him then. Well I thought we’d give him a second chance.

“I won’t be choosing the coach, let me say that, we’ve got a committee that’s doing that. But I want people to understand that we’re starting from the top not the bottom so, yes, we’re interested in Warren.”
