Doctor Khumalo celebrating South Africa's win in the 1996 African Cup of Nations final.

In what remains arguably Bafana Bafana's greatest achievement, it is exactly 25 years ago today when captain Neil Tovey lifted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on 3 February 1996, to crown South Africa as the best in Africa.

On this historic day, those iconic images rich in wistful nostalgia come flooding back, displaying some of South Africa's football greats celebrating alongside 80 000 fans, including Nelson Mandela.

Jumping back to that day in 1996, you would find that "One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey and Boyz ll Men had spent five weeks on top of the music charts.
