Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns' third choice goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse has been named as back-up to Bruce Bvuma, Darren Keet and Ronwen Williams for Bafana Bafana at AFCON 2019.

Pieterse has seen limited game-time for Sundowns in 2018/19 as he trails behind in the pecking order with Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene ahead of him.

However, coach Stuart Baxter is a firm believer in the abilities of the shot-stopper having used him in goal during their time together with Kaizer Chiefs.

As such, the 27-year-old has been named in Bafana's COSAFA Cup squad who are set to take on Botswana in a quarterfinal on 2 June in the competition.

Baxter said: "We have our three goalkeepers [for AFCON]. If one of those goalkeepers is injured in the preparation, we don't want to go pick up a goalkeeper who is four weeks on the beach and then has to go play an AFCON game.

"So Reyaad is the one we are hoping to get game time [in the COSAFA Cup] and will therefore make himself available should we need him."

Pieterse already has three international caps to his name which came against Botswana, Namibia and Madagascar in 2018.

Bafana open their AFCON campaign when they take on the Ivory Coast in Cairo on June 25.
