FIFA has explained how the voting for the player and coach categories took place - national team captains, national team managers, selected journalists and, for the first time, an online poll of fans, with each accounting for 25% of the total.

According to Soccer Laduma website, Baxter did not vote for Juventus star and Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo while Hlatshwayo did not give a nod to Lionel Messi.

Instead, Baxter selected Messi, Eden Hazard and Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne while Hlatshwayo chose Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Kylian Mbappe.

The winner was announced on Monday evening and Croatian maestro Modric, who beat out Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah, claimed the prestigious accolade.

Meanwhile, Didier Deschamps received the Best Coach gong for steering France to a World Cup triumph in Russia.
