English sides face Champions League exit

Cape Town - The Champions League knockout stages reach their business end this week - and three of the four English clubs face elimination from the tournament.

Only Manchester City are guaranteed participation in the last 16, while Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all have work to do.

Here is how the four English clubs are looking going in Tuesday and Wednesday night's matches:

Manchester City

City are home and dry, though they are still playing for top spot in the group. They host Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday night, but regardless of the outcome they will be through to the last 16.

Manchester United

A little more complicated for the Red Devils, who travel to Wolfsburg on Tuesday night. A win for United guarantees their progression to the last 16 - and top spot. A draw will not be enough for them if PSV beat CSKA Moscow in the other match in the group. And, if United lose, they will be eliminated if PSV win or draw. It pretty much means that United have to win in Germany on Tuesday night.

Arsenal

The equation for the Gunners is simpler, but no less daunting. Three points behind Olympiacos, they simply have to win in Greece on Wednesday night. But with the head-to-head rule applying, Arsenal must better the 3-2 scoreline they conceded against the same opposition at the Emirates earlier in the competition. Arsenal do have the superior goal difference in the group, so if they win 3-2 they will progress. Simply put ... any Arsenal win other than 1-0 or 2-1 will be enough for them to qualify.

Chelsea

The Special One need not panic ... Chelsea need just a point at home to FC Porto on Wednesday night to ensure qualification. But, if they lose and Dynamo Kiev beat Maccabi Tel Aviv, then Chelsea will be knocked out.
