English sides face Champions League exit

Cape Town - The Champions League knockout stages reach their business end this week.

From an English point of view, Manchester United have already been bundled out the tournament, while their bitter rivals Manchester City have progress to the last 16.

On Wednesday night Arsenal and Chelsea will have their fate decided...

What the two English clubs in Wednesday night's matches need to do:

Arsenal

The equation for the Gunners is simple, but no less daunting. Three points behind Olympiacos, they simply have to win in Greece on Wednesday night. But with the head-to-head rule applying, Arsenal must better or equal the 3-2 scoreline they conceded against the same opposition at the Emirates earlier in the competition. Arsenal do have the superior goal difference in the group, so if they win 3-2 they will progress. Simply put ... any Arsenal win other than 1-0 or 2-1 will be enough for them to qualify.

Chelsea

The Special One need not panic ... Chelsea need just a point at home to FC Porto on Wednesday night to ensure qualification. But, if they lose and Dynamo Kiev beat Maccabi Tel Aviv, then Chelsea will be knocked out.
