Carrick: Top four finish still possible

Cape Town - Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes that his side are still capable of finishing in the top four this season.

United were beaten 1-0 by West Bromwich Albion on Sunday and are now in sixth place on the Premier League standings. However, just three points separate them from rivals Manchester City, who currently occupy fourth place and the final Champions League spot.

In order to move up the standings and compete in the Champions League next season, Carrick admitted that there is no room for further slip ups.

"[The top four] is not out of sight. We just need to get back to winning ways, that's it," he told Sky Sports.

"It's easy to say, but we've got to bounce back. We've got big games coming up and we've got to be ready for them."

United were on a four-game winning streak in all competitions heading into their match against West Brom and Carrick believes that Juan Mata’s red card in the 27th minute played an instrumental role in the Red Devils’ loss.

"We wanted to carry on the form we've shown of late," Carrick said.

"It's very disappointing. It's a tough game coming here anyway, but losing a man makes it more difficult. In the second half they had one chance and scored.

"[The red card] changed the game because you put one less man in the attacking areas, which affected us on the break especially.

"I thought we were comfortable for most of the second half, but that was the difference in the end.

"It is what it is. I have seen the second one [booking], I didn't get a good look at it, but it was a setback for us. You'll have to ask him [if he's let the team down]."
