Cape Town - Goals from Andy King and Charlie Daniels gave Bournemouth a 3-1 win over Newcastle at St James' Park on Saturday.

It was a bright start from Newcastle United as Jonjo Shelvey tried his luck from about 25 yards out, but dragged his shot narrowly wide.

However, after the initial stages Bournemouth began to take control of the match as Andrew Surman went close in the seventh minute but was also off target.

Two minutes later, Adam Smith chipped a cross in for Benik Afobe, who skillfully chested the ball down before volleying it goalward, but the shot flew just over the bar.

Things went from bad to worse for Newcastle in the 28th minute as Andy King hit a cross in from the left wing and Taylor moved to intercept the ball, but ended up deflecting it past his own goalkeeper to give Bournemouth the lead.

The defender nearly made amends on the stroke of half time, but his deflected shot from the edge of the area slid wide of the post.

The home fans voiced their discontent with a chorus of boos when the referee blew for half time.

Newcastle were slightly better in the second period and had a couple of decent chances in the 62nd minute with Aleksandar Mitrovic shooting wide before Georginio Wijnaldum forced Artur Boruc into a save, the first he had to make in the match, from a tight angle.

Their resurgence was shattered in the 70th minute when Matt Ritchie played in King, who turned well in the box before thumping the ball past Rob Elliot to make it 2-0 to the visitors.

The Magpies refused to go down without a fight and found a lifeline in the 80th minute after Shelvey played a beautiful ball in behind the Cherries defence for Perez, who neatly finished past Boruc to bring the score to 2-1.

However, it would be the visitors who would finish the strongest. Marc Pugh forced a good save out of Elliot in the 86th minute before Lewis Grabban fired wide a minute later.

Two minutes into injury time Daniels secured the win for Bournemouth as he was allowed a free run into the Newcastle box as their defence inexplicably backed off him and he smashed his shot into the top corner to give the away side a well-deserved 3-1 win.

Boos once again sounded around the stadium as the final whistle blew, along with fans singing 'you're getting sacked in the morning' to Newcastle manager Steve McClaren.
