Hughes: Wilshere should have seen red

Cape Town - Southampton manager Mark Hughes believes Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere should have been sent off in the Saints' 3-2 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Shane Long and Charlie Austin found the back of the net for the visitors, but a brace from Danny Welbeck and a goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw Arsenal claim all three points.

In stoppage-time, Jack Stephens was sent off for throwing Wilshere to the ground after the Arsenal player ripped his shirt in a tussle off the ball. Wilshere only received a yellow card and Hughes believes he was lucky not to have seen red as well.

"I've got to be a little bit careful in terms of referees, it's not an easy role clearly," Hughes told Sky Sports.

"Clearly Jack (Stephens) has reacted to Wilshere clearly pulling him back, so he's reacted just to get rid of him really.

"I was a little bit disappointed the referee didn't see Wilshere, I think he made a definite movement with his knee, when he bounced up to remonstrate with Jack (Stephens).

"If the referee had seen that I think he would have sent him off.

"I think both of them should have gone."
