I'll stop playing, if I believe we can't catch City - Pogba

Cape Town - Paul Pogba insists he will keep fighting as Manchester United look to haul in neighbours Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

The 24-year-old midfielder returned from a two-month injury lay-off with a goal and assist to help the Red Devils come from behind to beat Newcastle 4-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

City, meanwhile, continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 2-0 victory at Leicester on the same day, which maintained the eight-point gap to United in second place.

However, Pogba is refusing to write off his team's title hopes as a gruelling fixture schedule awaits during the festive period, where points are most likely to be dropped.

Asked if he thought Jose Mourinho's side could dethrone Chelsea, the France international told BBC Sport: "The season is very long, of course. If I don't believe that, I'd stop playing.

"If I don't believe we can still win the league, I better stop. I'll leave my boots and stop playing football cause I'm a believer we keep fighting."

Pogba admits he was delighted to see his good friend, Romelu Lukaku, end a seven-game goal drought by getting on the scoresheet against the Magpies.

"I come back and Romelu scores again? I like that," he said. "We've got a lot of good players, a lot of talented players. We have to trust each other.

"Romelu is the best striker in the Premier League. We know his quality. We know everything. We don't worry about him. And at the end, we see the result."
