Cape Town - Sunderland manager David Moyes has insisted that the club's inability to sign the right players led to their relegation from the Premier League.

The Black Cats' relegation was confirmed on Saturday when they lost 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light, bringing to an end their 10-year stay in the top flight.

Moyes was appointed only six weeks before the transfer window closed, and with limited funds available, was unable to get the right personnel through the doors.

“If you look at what we have been able to bring in – there has been less this year, and that has obviously affected it,” said Moyes, according to Chronicle Live.

“You probably need to look back to the start of the season to see where we needed to make the recruitment better, but time was so short and that was where the difficulty was.”

Sunderland only managed to collect 21 points from their 34 games this campaign. They are seven points adrift of 19th-placed Middlesbrough.
