Cape Town - Wayne Rooney believes that Marcus Rashford is the future of Manchester United and the England team.

The young striker has become an overnight sensation, and Rooney is confident that the 18-year-old’s stock will continue to rise if he keeps on the right path.

Rashford has already had a huge impact for United this season, scoring four goals and notching up one assist in nine appearances for the club in all competitions.

"I think Marcus is doing fantastic," Rooney said. "He is probably one of the most exciting players in world football, young players, at the minute.

"I am sure if he keeps working hard and developing he'll be a superstar in years to come."

Rashford was recently included in interim England manager Gareth Southgate's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta on Saturday and Slovenia next Tuesday.

The striker failed to make the cut for Sam Allardyce's first, and only squad last month, but he responded in style scoring a hat-trick in his England Under-21 debut against Norway.

Having shown an admirable attitude after being snubbed from the England team during Allardyce’s short tenure as manager, Rooney feels that Rashford deserves to be called up to the senior team and has backed him to have a major impact.

"It's important with exciting young players that they get the rewards they deserve and I think he deserves it," Rooney said.

"He's been fantastic since he got into the Manchester United squad and he's carried that on again this season so he fully deserves his chance to be in the squad and to play.
