Cape Town - Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is facing the prospect of missing the final few weeks of the season with a foot injury sustained on Saturday against Swansea.

The 21-year-old left-back has endured a torrid time at Old Trafford since suffering a double leg break against PSV in November 2015, which ruled him out for the campaign.

Shaw has struggled to establish himself under United boss Jose Mourinho, partly due to injury, although his desire was recently brought into question by the Portuguese coach.

The Southampton youth product was given another chance at the weekend, but he lasted just 10 minutes before being forced off, with Mourinho saying after the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford that he expected the injury to be "big".

Scans on Monday revealed ligament damage, and the England international will now see a specialist to determine the severity of the problem, with fears he could not only be sidelined for the remainder of 2016/17 but also pre-season and the start of the new campaign.

Meanwhile United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been "fixed" and feels "stronger" after undergoing knee surgery in the United States, he said on Tuesday.

Ibrahimovic, 35, faces a long period of rehabilitation after sustaining ligament damage in his right knee during United's Europa League quarter-final win against Anderlecht last month.

With his United contract due to expire at the end of the season, his future at the club is in doubt.
