Cape Town - England left-back Luke Shaw admits he has to earn the trust of Jose Mourinho after a rough ride on his return to action at Manchester United.

Shaw's promising career at Old Trafford was put on hold for 10 months last season after suffering a horrific double leg break while in Champions League action.

However, the 21-year-old was singled out for blame by Mourinho in United's defeat at Watford last month and wasn't even on the bench for the loss at Chelsea last weekend.

Shaw did earn a recall for the EFL Cup win against Manchester City in midweek, though, and with fellow defender Eric Bailly facing several months on the sidelines with knee ligament damage, the former Southampton man is hoping to reestablish himself in the first team.

"It's normal that you're frustrated on Sunday because I would have loved to play in that game," Shaw said.

"But it obviously wasn't meant to be and at the end of the day it is the manager's decision.

"Obviously, with the injury with Eric now it might be my time to step up and show the manager what I can do and that he can trust me."

Despite his lack of game-time, Shaw could earn a recall to the England set-up during the international break, with fellow left-back Ryan Bertrand on the treatment table.

Shaw hopes to get an opportunity to reunite with caretaker England boss Gareth Southgate after working alongside the former Middlesbrough manager when he was in charge of the Under-21s.

"I am sure that he is going to do a really good job with the senior team and I am really looking forward to hopefully linking up with him again," added Shaw.

"I really love playing for my country and I hope Gareth gives me the nod.

"Obviously I know Ryan Bertrand's injured, so I think maybe it might be my time to go back into the England squad and hopefully get some game time."
