Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on two Manchester United stars for their caring charity work.

The former Man United boss has singled out Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata for praise for how they have helped people less fortunate than them.

Rashford worked tirelessly in 2020 to overturn the government’s decision to stop free school meals. After months of campaigning, the forward had earned the support of the nation as he ensured that millions of children would not go without food.

His work continued past the summer, as he helped secure a grant that would help underprivileged families during the winter months.

In 2017, Mata set up the Common Goal Project. This saw footballers across the world donate some of their wages to charities around the globe.

Sir Alex told the Daily Mail that Rashford and Mata both deserve enormous credit for the work that they have done off the pitch:

“[Rashford] has always been a good kid. He joined us when he was nine years of age.

“When you see people’s demeanour, behaviour, way of carrying themselves and ability to change things, that’s him. He’s got that.

“He’s come from a working-class background and he knows what it’s like. When I was at school you had the free dinners and Marcus knows exactly what that’s like.”

“I know the boy at United, Juan Mata, who gives a percentage of his wages to charity.

“Look at what Rashford has done. Not all footballers are out buying cars. There’s a big percentage with a big heart. Football people aren’t idle.”
