Cape Town - England manager Roy Hodgson has named a relatively young World Cup squad to play in Brazil next month, and while some are concerned about the lack of experience in the side, captain Steven Gerrard believes the young talent is 'scary'.

Ross Barkley, Raheem Sterling and Luke Shaw were all called up by Hodgson after impressing for Everton, Liverpool and Southampton respectively.

"I think the young talent in this country is scary," said Gerrard.

"A lot of the young players have been fantastic this season and I am sure the manager wants them to continue that over in Brazil."

Gerrard - who will be 34 come the start of the World Cup - and Frank Lampard, 35, will be the oldest in the England side.

"Hopefully they have that no-fear factor and they can go there and enjoy themselves and the likes of myself, Frank Lampard and Rickie [Lambert] - the experienced lads in the squad - can take some pressure off them and we can look after them", the Liverpool midfielder told BBC Sport.

Gerrard will be going into his third World Cup - his second as captain - but insists he cannot predict the outcome of the tournament.

"It would be very stupid and naive of me to stand here and say 'yeah we're going to win it'. What I can guarantee is that we will go there and give 100%," he said.

"There are some top teams around the world all fighting for the same thing, but all we can do is try and stick together, work hard and see if we can prove some doubters wrong."
