Cape Town - Debate is raging as to where Barcelona's Lionel Messi will be playing his football at the end of the January transfer window.

Messi was benched for Barcelona's first La Liga match of 2015 - their defeat to David Moyes' Real Sociedad - and skipped training on Monday, citing a stomach ailment.

Coach Luis Enrique was is widely reported to be upset with the Argentine superstar - which has opened the door to a host of potential, mega-rich new clubs for Messi before the January transfer window closes.

Leading SA bookmakers SportingBet have been quick to offer odds on where 27-year-old will be playing next month.

Barcelona remain the odds-on favourites at 1/8, followed by Chelsea (6/1) and French and German giants PSG and Bayern Munich (both 16/1).

A new home in Manchester can be back at 20/1 (Manchester City) and 25/1 (Manchester United).

A move to bitter Spanish rivals Real Madrid is an unlikely 100/1.
