Cape Town - Soccer icon David Beckham will compete in the world's toughest triathlon with his friend, chef Gordon Ramsay.

According to the Xpose Entertainment website, the pair have been hard in training for the gruelling Ironman event in Kona, Hawaii that friends have nicknamed them 'Rocky' and 'Apollo' from the iconic 1976 boxing flick 'Rocky', starring Sylvester Stallone.

Beckham gave Ramsey fitness tips when the 46-year-old TV chef was preparing earlier this month for the event - and now he's recruited him as a sidekick for next year's event.

Ramsey conquered the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42.2km run in just over 14 hours.

A friend of Beckham, 38, told the Daily Star newspaper: ''David became jealous of Gordon after giving him training advice.

"They've been getting up at 04:00 to train on the beach."

The potty-mouthed chef has lost over 28 pounds after a year of following a strict diet and exercise regime in preparation for the triathlon.

Beckham retired from soccer in May this year after a storied career at clubs Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and PSG - along others.

Beckham was mentioned in former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's autobiography earlier this week as "the only player I managed who chose to be famous, who made it his mission to be known outside the game."

In addition, on his (Ferguson's) clash with Beckham following an FA Cup defeat by Arsenal in February 2003:

"David swore.
"I moved towards him, and as I approached I kicked a boot.
"It hit him right above the eye.
"Of course he rose to have a go at me and the players stopped him. 'Sit down,' I said. 'You've let your team down.
"You can argue as much as you like.'"
