Cape Town - Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as the Portuguese Player of the Year for the third successive time at a gala ceremony in Lisbon on Monday evening.

The 33-year-old scooped the Quinas de Oro award for 2017 beating out compatriots Bernado Silva of Manchester City and Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

The award is only three years old with Ronaldo unsurprisingly winning on all three occasions.

He received 65% of the votes well ahead of Patricio with 18% and Silva with 17%.

This is the latest accolade in what was an exceptional 2017 for the Portuguese who clinched the Ballon d'Or and FIFA's The Best award after lifting the La Liga, Champions League and Club World Cup trophies with Madrid.

"It is a prize also for all my colleagues," Ronaldo said. "2017 was an excellent year, unforgettable both collectively and individually. I also dedicate it to my four children, that's another record, three children in three months.

"We have to defend what is ours because there is always a Portuguese in the fight. I always believe and say that I am the best, whatever they say, and then I show it on the field. We are in the fight year after year."

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim was named the Portuguese Coach of the Year after winning the Ligue 1 title with the French side reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
