Panama City - Gianni Infantino's bid to become FIFA President received a boost on Monday after the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) endorsed his campaign for world soccer's top job.

A statement from UNCAF said the regional federation -- which represents seven votes in next month's FIFA presidential election - had opted to support the UEFA general secretary.

"The Executive Committee of UNCAF ... has decided to support the candidacy (of) Mr. Gianni Infantino," a brief statement on the UNCAF website stated on Monday.

The decision to pledge bloc support for Infantino was taken after a meeting in Panama City on Monday.

UNCAF comprises Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua.

Infantino joined the race to succeed suspended FIFA President Sepp Blatter on February 26 following the ban handed down to UEFA supremo Michel Platini.

Infantino has vowed to clean up FIFA if elected after months of corruption allegations which have plunged the global football body into the worst crisis in its history.

Infantino has planned to introduce 12-year term limits for top key officials and increase transparency throughout FIFA.

He has also proposed expanding the World Cup to 40 teams and establishing a "clear rotation" system for hosting the tournament under which each continent would need to wait for at least two editions before hosting the event again.
