WATCH: 'King of Rome' Totti says goodbye to Roma

Cape Town - Francesco Totti called time on an illustrious Roma career after making his 786th and final appearance at the Stadio Olimpico in a 3-2 win over Genoa on Sunday.

"The god of football" as he is known to fans came on in the 54th minute in Roma's final game of the season and is expected to become a director at his one and only club.

The 40-year-old made his debut at the club at the age of 16 scoring a club record 307 goals in a 25-year span at the club and is seen by many as the greatest player to don the iconic yellow and red jersey.

Totti who is the youngest club captain in Italian history won his only Serie A title in 2000-01 - finishing as a runner-up nine times - said: "Winning one league title at Roma to me is worth winning 10 at Juventus or Real Madrid."

He played all seven games as Italy were crowned World Cup champions in 2006 scoring once and providing three assists.

The veteran striker received an outpouring of well wishes from legends in football with many fans left in tears as he waved goodbye to supporters at the Stadio Olimpico.
