Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs secured a 1-0 win over Cape Town City in their Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

As it happened: Kaizer Chiefs v Cape Town City

The hard-fought victory takes Amakhosi to second spot on the league standings, while the Citizens remain sixth on the table.

The Citizens saw a lot of the ball in the opening stages and they threatened first through Lyle Lakay, who tried his luck from range.

The left-footed winger's powerful long-range narrowly missed the target 13 minutes into the match.

Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was then called into action eight minutes later by City midfielder Teko Modise.

Khune produced a brilliant diving save to deny City midfielder Teko Modise, who was looking to score with a well-taken long-range shot.

Amakhosi had a chance to take the lead in the 27th minute when Joseph Molangoane beat the two City defenders, before setting up Siphelele Ntshangase.

However, Ntshangase placed his effort over the crossbar without troubling Sage Stephens, who is now the Citizens' first-choice 'keeper.

Willard Katsande also had a chance to break the deadlock just before the half-time break after the City defence was caught napping.

However, the Zimbabwean hardman hit the side-netting after the visitors had failed to clear their lines.

The teams went into half-time dead-locked at 0-0 after an entertaining opening 45 minutes.

It took only two minutes for Ryan Moon, who had a quiet first half, to break the deadlock for Amakhosi after the restart.

The lanky forward ran on to Leonardo Castro's through pass and he poked the ball home to make it 1-0 to Chiefs.

Benni McCarthy, the City coach reacted by pulling off Modise and he introduced promising midfielder Shane Roberts in the 59th minute.

However, the Citizens struggled to penetrate the Amakhosi defence which was marshalled by Teenage Hadebe.

The Zimbabwe international made a great goal line clearance with 11 minutes left after Sibusiso Masina had beaten Khune following a quick move by the visitors.

It was end-to-end stuff in the closing stages of the game as Stephens produced two great saves to deny Moon and Hendrick Ekstein from close range.

Ultimately, Chiefs ran out 1-0 winners after containing the visitors in the dying minutes of the game.
