Cape Town - A transformed and confident Maritzburg United made a positive start to life under new coach Ernst Middendorp, despite being held to a 2-2 draw by SuperSport United in their Absa Premiership clash at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Maritzburg deserved to walk away with the three points as they were better team and created better chances than the home side in search for the second win of the league campaign.

The game soon burst into life after only eight minutes when a cross on the left-hand side by Kurt Lentjies was met by the outstretched right boot of Mondli Cele.

But SuperSport hit back with an attempted shot from Thato Mokeke, which Tawfeeq Salie parried away for a corner.

Maritzburg started the second-half by throwing caution to the wind and should have had a second when Evans Rusike evaded two defenders by cutting inside and delivering a pin-point ball for Deolin Mekoa to slot home. Unfortunately the goal wrongly ruled to be offside.

There was further heartbreak for visitors when Daniels levelled 70th minute, heading in a David Mathebula corner.

Kwanda Mngonyama re-established the lead for Maritzburg five minutes later by rifling past Ronwen Williams after a corner was not cleared.

However, it was Jeremy Brockie headed in for a share of the spoils with less than two minutes to play.
