Cape Town - Things don't seem to be getting any easier for Eric Tinkler and Orlando Pirates.

Sunday's 2-0 loss at Mamelodi Sundowns sees the Buccaneers languishing in 13th place as the PSL enters its Christmas break. They have played less games than those around them due to their CAF Confederation Cup commitments, but having won just three out of their 10 fixtures this season will be a major concern for fans.

For former striker Andries Sebola, the problems start at the back.

Sebola has urged the Bucs management to beef up their defence, either by bringing in a player like Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo or by backing someone like Tshepo Gumede, who has battled to get any first team action since joining from Platinum Stars.

“The writing is on the wall for everyone to see that Pirates need to repair their defence with new players that will bring something different,” Sebola told Goal.com.

“There is also Tshepo Gumede who for me is another player that deserves a chance to play.

“He was doing well for Platinum Stars that is why Pirates signed him and should be played, especially based on the fact the team has got problems in defence.”

Sebola added that it was not easy for fans to watch Pirates going through this difficult slump.

“It’s really disappointing to see the team struggling but I think it is a combination of many factors,” he said.

Pirates are next in league action when they take on Platinum Stars on January 9.
