Cape Town - Free State Stars assistant coach Bradley Carnell has assured the club's fans they will not be signing players just for the sake of it in January.

Ea Lla Koto recently acquired the services of former Bloemfontein Celtic defender Davies Nkausu, and Carnell insisted a lot of work goes on behind the scenes before any signing is completed.

"We are still assessing the squad to see if there are areas in need of shoring up," Carnell told the club's website.

"As a club you are always working in the background looking to improve the playing squad. If the right kind of player becomes available then we will try to bring him in, but otherwise there will be no panic buys.

"We inherited a squad that is in very good shape with very good structures in place. The same players showed that they are capable of competing and winning matches.

"So we are not going to make changes for the sake of change. It is not just about the players in the match-day squad. We want to build a strong team. The squad is therefore a work in progress."

The former Bafana Bafana international went on to reveal the mood within the camp remains positive despite a 3-1 loss to high-flying Golden Arrows last weekend.

"I have been impressed by the players' response. They have not allowed their heads to drop. The commitment in training has been tremendous and the spirit in the squad is first class," he concluded.
