Chippa United sealed a place in the last four of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-1 victory over GladAfrica Championship side Richards Bay at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on Saturday.
Anthony Laffor and Maloisane Mokhele were the goal-scorers for the Chilli Boys who have now made the semi-finals of the tournament for the third time in their history.
The home team could not have made a better start to the contest as Laffor opened the scoring in the fifth minute.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns forward took advantage of a poor back pass from Moses Mthembu to slot past Ludwe Mpakumpaku in the Richards Bay goal.
The visitors recovered from the that early setback to take control of proceedings but could not penetrate a stubborn defence.
The closest they came to scoring was in the 17th minute when a probing Reggy Zondi cross was cleared by defender Nyiko Mobbie close to the goal-line when Chigaemezu Ogbonna looked certain to tap in.
Chippa doubled their lead close to the hour mark when Mokhele found the back of the net after a cut back from striker Augustine Kwem.
Richards Bay never stopped fighting though and made it a nervous end to the game when Siyabonga Vilane pulled a goal back in the 90th minute when he headed in from a set-piece.
Chippa however saw out the remaining minutes to make sure they progressed to the semifinals of the competition.
The visitors must now lick their wounds and concentrate on their fight for promotion as they currently sit on top of the GladAfrica Championship table after 16 matches.
