Cape Town - Cape Town City boss John Comitis says head coach Eric Tinkler's relationship with his players has been the cornerstone of the team's success.

Going into the last three matches of the season, the Citizens are in third spot, five points behind league leaders Bidvest Wits.

The difference could be cut to two points if City can beat SuperSport United in Pretoria on Tuesday night.

It's certainly been a case of punching above their weight for the Cape side, who are in the first season of existence following the buy-out of the Black Aces franchise in the middle of 2016.

And going into the final lap of the campaign, Comitis has heaped praise on his head coach, who has already won silverware with the club in the form of the 2016 Telkom Knockout.

"Eric has a father figure way about him," Comitis told IOL website.

"He doesn't need ready-made players, he is prepared to build them up from the bottom. He rolls up his sleeves and gets stuck into the job.

"Most importantly, he is always honest with his players. They know exactly where they stand with him.

"He gets everybody in the squad to feel a part of things, nobody is left out in the cold. And, also, everybody has this season been able to see his tactical preparation for a game, it is always of the highest order.

"The team structure has been organised and every player knows exactly what is expected of him," added the former Ajax Cape Town boss.
