Cape Town - After a 1-1 draw in normal time Jomo Cosmos went on to win the penalty shootout in their Nedbank Cup clash with AmaZulu at Profert Olën Park on Tuesday.

The first 20 minutes or so passed without incident until former Bidvest Wits striker Denver Mukamba popped up with a left-footed effort to fire Jomo Cosmos into the lead.

AmaZulu were dealt another blow towards the end of the first half when captain Mark van Heerden had to be substituted off, to be replaced by Tshepo Liphoko, after picking up an injury with an awkward landing, as Usuthu went in at halftime trailing by a single goal.

With Usuthu needing to chase the match they decided to make a substitution 10 minutes into the second half, with Bornwell Mwape entering the fray to replace Linda Bhengu.

AmaZulu's efforts to find an equaliser were rewarded in the 72nd minute, when Zambian midfielder Allan Mukuka tapped it into the back of the net from close range to level the scores at 1-1.

AmaZulu then made their final substitution of the match, with Zaid Patel replacing Ayanda Dlamini, but it was not enough for them to take the lead, as the match headed into extra time.

Tempers flared in the addition half an hour, with Mame Niang getting himself a red card in the 109th minute, possibly for a comment to the referee after his appeal for a penalty was denied.

The match then went to penalties, with Bornwell Mwape scoring the first one for AmaZulu and Cheslyn Jampies doing the same for Cosmos, but Tshepo Liphoko, Luyanda Hlongwa, and Alan Robertson all missed their efforts for Usuthu, allowing Cosmos to win the match 3-2 on penalties.
